Matt holmes

structural engineer

MEng Structural Engineering & Architecture (RIBA Part I)

Matt joined Milk full time in the autumn of 2018 after two summer placements with us, carried out whilst he completed his MEng in Sheffield. Studying both Structural Engineering and Part 1 Architecture, Matt has experience in the conceptual design of buildings as well as the detailed, technical design. This gave Matt a thorough understanding of the design process, perfect for Milk’s ethos, and has enabled him to work on a wide variety of projects.

At Milk, Matt’s key projects have ranged from temporary installations for the Dubai Global Graduate show & at the London Design Festival, staircase design for Nike’s flagship store in Paris as well as a design competition entry for RIBA Home of 2030. He has also worked on many refurbishment works in listed buildings where the work has been to either reinstate & restore existing structure or sensitively adapt it for a new purpose. A little further afield: There’s a Tourism Office in Delhi fitted out to a design by Matt following a chance encounter whilst traveling!

Matt has recently spent a year volunteering in Croatia at an NGO focussing on sustainable development, with a particular focus on construction with natural materials. Here he gained hands-on experience building with straw, clay, timber and on green roof construction as well as assisting with projects promoting ecological food production.

Outside of design work Matt likes travelling Europe in his little red kombi, sketching, playing music and trying to speak Croatian & German.
